Gas vs. Electric Water Heaters: Which Is Best for Plano Homes?

For most Plano homeowners, the gas-versus-electric decision is made by what is already installed — and staying with your existing fuel is usually the least expensive, fastest path. But heat-pump electric water heaters have changed the math enough that the question is worth asking properly before you replace. Here is how the two compare in real Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex conditions.
How each type heats water
A gas water heater burns natural gas in a burner below the tank and vents combustion gases through a flue. A standard electric water heater uses two resistance elements immersed in the tank. A heat-pump (hybrid) electric unit works like an air conditioner in reverse: it moves heat out of the surrounding air into the water, using roughly a third of the electricity of resistance elements, with elements as backup for heavy demand.
Upfront cost and installation scope
A like-for-like replacement in either fuel is the simplest job — same location, same connections, plus current code items such as a new relief valve and compliant discharge line, a drain pan where leakage could cause damage, and thermal-expansion control on a closed system.
Standard electric tanks are usually the least expensive equipment. Gas tanks cost somewhat more and add venting requirements. Heat-pump units carry the highest equipment cost and need adequate air volume, clearances, a condensate drain path and often a dedicated circuit — but rebates and low operating cost frequently offset the difference over the unit's life.
Switching fuels is where costs jump. Going gas-to-electric means a new 240V circuit, breaker capacity and possibly panel work. Going electric-to-gas means gas piping, a vent path and combustion-air provisions. Neither is unreasonable, but both are projects rather than swaps and should be priced honestly before you commit.
Operating cost in the Valley
In Plano, natural gas is delivered by Atmos Energy and electricity by Oncor, and both utilities price seasonally, so winter operating cost is where the difference shows up. Two things follow from that:
- A gas tank is generally cheaper to run than a resistance electric tank.
- A heat-pump electric tank is usually the cheapest of all to run, because it uses a fraction of the energy of resistance heating.
Time-of-use plans reward electric heaters that can heat outside peak hours; most modern electric units allow scheduling. Comparing your actual rate plan matters more than comparing national averages.
Recovery speed and household demand
Gas recovers roughly twice as fast as resistance electric. That is why a 40-gallon gas heater and a 50-gallon electric heater are often treated as equivalents for the same household. Heat-pump units recover more slowly than gas in efficiency mode, which is why they are typically specified a size larger — a 65- or 80-gallon heat-pump tank for a family that would otherwise use a 50-gallon gas unit. Texas-specific considerations
The hot garage is an advantage for heat pumps
Heat pumps pull warmth from the surrounding air, so an unheated Plano garage in January is the wrong spot for one — a conditioned basement or utility room works far better. The same 110°F garage that stresses a gas control valve is free fuel for a heat-pump water heater. The trade-off is noise — a heat pump runs a fan and compressor, which most homeowners never notice in a garage but would notice in a hallway closet.
Hard water hits both fuels, differently
Scale coats electric elements directly, causing overheating and premature failure. In a gas unit, sediment settles on the tank bottom between the burner and the water, driving up burner run time. Either way, annual flushing and anode checks matter.
Venting and combustion air
Older Plano homes sometimes have flues that no longer meet current sizing requirements, or a heater in a closet without adequate combustion air. Outages and resilience

- Stay with standard electric if you have no gas service, want the simplest and cheapest replacement, and your usage is moderate.
- Choose heat-pump electric if the heater is in a garage or open utility space with room and a condensate path, and you want the lowest operating cost over the next decade.
